The research led by the Pulmonology Department is integrated into the Area of Respiratory, Cardiovascular and Renal Biopathology and Bioengineering at the August Pi Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS) and is carried out in the following groups:

• Applied research in respiratory infections and critical illness
• Inflammation and repair in respiratory diseases
• Translational research in pulmonary vascular diseases: cell proliferation and apoptotic mechanisms of pulmonary arterial hypertension

The Pulmonology Department also leads research initiatives designed to achieve excellence and European leadership in translating research findings into clinical practice, and exploring new ways of leveraging the knowledge generated in the field of respiratory medicine.
