Rehabilitation Department Service
The Rehabilitation Department is part of the Institute of Medical and Surgical Specialties of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona (ICEMEQ).
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is the medical specialty responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of disability with the aim of recovering, as far as possible, bodily functions lost due to illness and/or injury. To this end, various health professionals intervene from their specific fields: rehabilitation doctors, physiotherapists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, clinical assistants, etc.
It serves a reference population of approximately 533,470 inhabitants in the Barcelona Esquerra Integrated Health Area (AISBE).
Patients are treated on an inpatient basis at all the hospital's institutes/departments, or on an outpatient basis at two centres: the Casanova and Plató centres. The team of professionals at the Department is responsible for diagnosing the illness, injury and/or disability of each patient and establishing therapeutic proposals and follow-up according to clinical needs.
As a cross-disciplinary medical specialty, the Department is structured into care areas: musculoskeletal - including occupational musculoskeletal disorders in occupational health-, neurorehabilitation - including central and peripheral nervous system disorders, vestibular dysfunctions, neurodegenerative diseases and neuromuscular diseases-, cardiorespiratory rehabilitation, onco-rehabilitation, rehabilitation, vascular rehabilitation - including amputees and patients with lymphoedema -, pelvic floor dysfunctions and rehabilitation of speech, voice and language disorders and dysphagia.
The Department's healthcare activity is coordinated with teaching, research and innovation in different lines of study.
The Department’s mission, as specialists in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, is to provide comprehensive, personalized and multidisciplinary care to patients with disabilities and/or functional limitations, in order to improve their quality of life.

The Department of Rehabilitation has physiotherapists and speech therapists, working both at the Casanova site and the Plató site. In addition, it provides cross-cutting services to approximately 35 hospital units, including inpatient wards, the day hospital, and intensive care units.
