Reading time: 1 min

Research activity is a defining feature of the Glaucoma group and is conducted through the Biological Aggression and Response Mechanisms Area of the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS). Specifically, through the group: Ocular Inflammation: clinical and experimental studies.
Research focuses on the following lines:

  • Optical coherence tomography of the optic nerve, retinal ganglion cells, and the blood vessels of the optic nerve and retina.
  • Study of filtering blebs using imaging techniques (optical coherence tomography, confocal microscopy).
  • Genetic factors associated with glaucoma and response to treatments.
  • Inflammatory factors involved in uveitic glaucoma.
  • 24-hour intraocular pressure monitoring.
  • Effectiveness of new drainage devices.
  • Real-world data and knowledge-based health systems.
  • Use of artificial intelligence for early detection of glaucoma.

Currently, several clinical trials are underway, with participation in two national multicenter FIS projects and in multiple international collaborative projects. In addition, two privately funded research projects are being conducted (neuroprotective drugs and new surgical implants).

Various technical advisory activities have also been carried out within the Working Group of the Advisory Council for the Harmonization of Medicines in Primary and Community Care and Specialized Care (CAMPC) of CatSalut.

Regarding representation in scientific societies, at the national level there is participation in the Spanish Glaucoma Society, and internationally, the glaucoma team is represented in the Executive Committee, the Communication Committee, and the Clinical Guidelines Planning Committee of the European Glaucoma Society (EGS).
