Investigación sobre Glaucoma en el Clínic

Reading time: 1 min

Research activity is a defining feature of the Glaucoma group and is conducted through the Biological Aggression and Response Mechanisms Area of the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS). Specifically, through the group: Ocular Inflammation: clinical and experimental studies.
Research focuses on the following lines:

  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) of the optic nerve, retinal ganglion cells, and the blood vessels of the optic nerve and retina.
  • Study of filtration blebs using imaging techniques (such as Optical Coherence Tomography and confocal microscopy).
  • Genetic factors associated with glaucoma and response to treatment.
  • Inflammatory factors that cause uveitic glaucoma.
  • 24-hour monitoring of intraocular pressure.
  • Effectiveness of new drainage devices.
  • Real-world data and Knowledge-based health systems.
  • Use of Artificial Intelligence for early detection of glaucoma.

At present, several clinical trials are ongoing. The Clínic participates in two national multicentre projects funded by the Spanish Health Research Fund (FIS) as well as in several international collaborative projects. There are also two research projects funded privately (neuroprotective drugs and new surgical implants).

Additionally, we have also provided technical advice to the Grup de Treball del Consell Assessor per a l’Harmonització de Medicaments en l’Àmbit d’Atenció Primària i Comunitària i l’Atenció Especialitzada (CAMPC) working group of CatSalut. In terms of representation within scientific societies, the glaucoma team is active nationally in the Spanish Glaucoma Society and internationally within the European Glaucoma Society (EGS), participating in the Executive Committee, the Communications Committee, and the Clinical Guidelines Planning Committee.
