Diagnosis of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP)

Reading time: 1 min

For many years, the diagnosis of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) was based on clinical symptoms and medical examination, according to the "classic" presentation of the disease, known as PSP-Richardson syndrome. There were no specific tests, and a definitive diagnosis could only be made post-mortem when an examination of the brain revealed abnormal accumulation of tau protein.

Since 2017, however, the diagnostic criteria have evolved and, in addition to the "classic" form, other forms of PSP are now recognised:

  • The category of "suggestive" PSP allows the condition to be suspected at an earlier stage, making it possible for patients to access clinical trials and new treatments sooner.
