Prognosis of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP)

Reading time: 1 min

Traditionally, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) has been described as a rapidly progressing disease that often leads to significant disability within a few years, including marked difficulties in walking, swallowing, and performing basic daily activities. In these cases, survival has generally been between 5 and less than 10 years from the onset of symptoms.

However, it is now known that not all people with PSP follows the same course. In addition to the classic form, known as PSP-Richardson, there are other variants in which the progression may be slower. In some cases, the patient may maintain a good level of independence and functional ability for a longer period. For this reason, prognosis is highly variable and depends on the specific form of the disease and each person’s characteristics.

By taking into account the clinical characteristics of each case and using biomarkers, healthcare teams will be likely, in the not-too-distant future, to provide more personalised information about the disease progression and prognosis for each patient.

However, it is important to emphasise, especially at the time of diagnosis, that it is impossible to predict with certainty how the disease will progress in a specific individual. Comparisons with other patients or with general information found online are not advisable.

Each person with PSP has their own progression, and supportive care plays a key role in ensuring that decisions and care are tailored to the patient’s specific circumstances.
