Research on Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP)

Reading time: 1 min

Research into Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) is making significant progress worldwide.

A major focus of current efforts includes:

  • Establishing international patient registries that gather data from numerous countries and continents, helping researchers to better understand differences between individuals and populations.
  • Ensuring the inclusion of groups that have been previously underrepresented.
  • Bringing together data from different centres to create large-scale international studies.

Biomarkers and diagnostic tests

Another important area of research is the development of biomarkers, i.e. tests that help identify the disease earlier and more accurately.

These studies particularly focus on detecting abnormal accumulation of tau protein in the brain, using laboratory analyses and advanced neuroimaging techniques.

This progress has been possible, in part, thanks to the work of neurological tissue banks, which preserve brain tissue donated after death by individuals who wish to contribute to research. This altruistic contribution is key to improving our understanding of the disease.

Clinical trials and new treatments

Clinical trials in this field focus on targeting the tau protein and other mechanisms involved in the disease, with the aim of developing treatments that can slow down or stop the progression of PSP.

Research on care and quality of life

In addition to medical treatments, research is also being carried out on nursing care, therapeutic education for patients and caregivers, as well as non-pharmacological treatments, such as speech therapy and physiotherapy, which play a key role in maintaining quality of life.
