Current research in the field of varicose disease follows, particularly, two large lines:
Natural history and genetic basis of the disease. It is fairly common for patients with varicose veins to have close relatives with the disease. Thus, it is known that there is a significant hereditary component, although it is not known which particular genes are involved.
Optimum treatment for each one of the different types of varicose veins. The therapeutic options for varicose disease go from compression therapy and changes in lifestyle to the different surgical options. Nowadays, the applying of one or another treatment is conditioned by the discomfort and preferences of the patient, as well as the experience and preference of the surgeon, with there being no clear evidence that one technique is clearly superior to another. There are also arguments about what are the best alternatives to avoid complications after the surgery such as, for example, the need to administer anticoagulants (heparin) as a preventive measure to avoid the risk of phlebitis or the need to use, and for how long, compression stockings.
