Research - Institute of Ophthalmology
Research at the Clínic Institute of Ophthalmology, carried out through the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute, focuses on the following area:
Several professionals lead competitive public research projects and, at the same time, participate in national research networks (Thematic Health Research Network) and are established research groups in Catalonia (Agency for the Management of University and Research Grants).
The main lines of research at ICOF are:
1. Prognostic factors (clinical, immunogenetic) and imaging findings in patients with macular oedema secondary to posterior uveitis.
2. New biological therapies in the treatment of non-infectious uveitis.
3. Study of genetic polymorphisms as risk factors for the various clinical manifestations of uveitis and its progression.
4. Infectious uveitis.
5. Macular pathology in diabetic patients.
6. AMD and Protein C
7. Visual pathway (in collaboration with the Neurology Department).
8. Genetics and glaucoma.
9. Imaging in glaucoma.
ICOF has a research laboratory specializing in ocular inflammation, as well as a clinical trials and clinical research unit.
In 2015, ICOF established the Clinical Trials Unit, dedicated to supervising and coordinating clinical research studies. The Unit is made up of a multidisciplinary team responsible for conducting Phase 2, 3 and 4 clinical trials. It has its own specialists in ophthalmology, optometrists, study coordinators and data managers, whose objectives are:
- To manage therapeutic clinical trials
- To provide support to researchers
- To develop its own lines of research
- To help improve the treatment of various ophthalmological conditions
- To offer patients the best therapeutic options, through the evaluation of new treatment strategies.
Every year, the Institute holds a research day where the research projects carried out by the Institute’s professionals are presented. The participation of ophthalmologists, optometrist and nursing staff is particularly noteworthy.
