Institute of Nephrology and Urology

The Clínic's Institute of Nephrology and Urology is the area of the Hospital Clínic responsible for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of nephrourological diseases.

The Institute works to offer patients quality treatment in accordance with the standards of a centre of excellence, within the framework of a hospital that combines high-quality care, teaching, research, and innovation.

It is a reference centre for kidney and urinary tract diseases in the local population, as well as a national and international referral centre for those conditions that require innovative therapies or complex surgery.

The main lines of healthcare activity are advanced chronic kidney disease, both hospital and home dialysis, including haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, the functional unit for vascular access for haemodialysis, therapeutic apheresis with all its procedures (cytapheresis, photopheresis, CAR T-cell therapy, plasma exchange, etc.), kidney and pancreatic transplantation, renal lithiasis, erectile dysfunction and male sexual pathology, pelvic floor pathology, and urinary incontinence.

The group of more than 300 professionals working at ICNU is made up of medical, nursing, and administrative staff who each year handle 4,600 hospital discharges, more than 3,200 surgical procedures, more than 220 kidney or pancreas-kidney transplants, and a progressive implementation of robot-assisted surgery.

On an outpatient basis, the ICNU handles more than 50,200 visits and more than 5,600 patients at the day hospital each year.

In addition, the Hospital Clínic is a reference centre (CSUR) of the National Health System for:

  • Paediatric kidney transplants
  • Pancreas transplants
  • Surgically complex adult kidney transplants
  • Complex glomerular diseases

Team of professionals

The ICNU is made up of more than 300 professionals, including medical, nursing and administrative staff. It is primarily made up of specialists in urology and nephrology, but also includes digestive surgeons, haematologists, endocrinologists, radiologists, pathologists, oncologists, pharmacologists, psychologists, nutritionists, physiotherapists, transplant coordinators, physicists and biologists.
