Internet addiction prevention

Reading time: 2 min

Many families are not aware of their children’s excessive use of Internet-connected devices until problems emerge, such as declining academic performance, social isolation, aggression when limits are imposed or even theft of money for betting or for purchasing items to enhance performance in video games. When Internet addictive behaviour develops, it can lead to a severe deterioration in personal relationships and in academic or professional development, seriously disrupting the normal course of life. Therefore, increasing emphasis is being placed on the need to develop prevention strategies to keep such problems from growing.

There are two types of "screen addiction" prevention strategies: specific and non-specific.

A happy person with self-esteem and good mental health.

Non-specific strategies are aimed at promoting adequate psychological development in young people via training in self-esteem, social and cognitive skills, problem-solving and emotion management, so they are able to make adequate decisions on controlling the use of electronic devices connected to the Internet. There are also programmes for parents, providing training in educational strategies, such as setting standards and limits, practising supportive, assertive communication and promoting positive values like commitment and effort, as well as encouraging healthy leisure activities.

Specific strategies focus on providing information about the risks of uncontrolled use of video games, social networks and the Internet in general; as well as promoting laws to regulate access to certain applications or games; and communicating preventive messages. More recently, efforts have been made to require technology companies to design their products so as not to promote addictive or harmful behaviours, particularly among minors.

In general, it is the role of parents and teachers to supervise, guide and teach moderation in the recreational use of new technologies, while also promoting a critical attitude toward digital content and culture. However, when information about risks, usage recommendations and educational guidelines are not enough to ensure responsible use in children and adolescents, and the criteria for problematic or addictive use are met, specific treatment becomes necessary.

Healthy screen use recommendations for families

The Servei de Psiquiatria i Psicologia Infanto-Juvenil (Child and Youth Psychiatry and Psychology Department) at Hospital Clínic has noted a recent increase in consultations for problems related to Internet and screen use, often accompanied by neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD and ASD, as well as other emotional and behavioural disorders. Preventive intervention is essential for these vulnerable minors; therefore, we have developed an infographic with specific recommendations for the families of our patients.
