Treatment of AMD at the Clínic

Reading time: 1 min

The Hospital Clínic Barcelona is a benchmark in the use of the most innovative treatments for Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

Wet AMD (neovascular) is a retina ageing process to which is added abnormal growth of blood vessels behind the macula, leading to image distortion. It is managed with periodic intraocular injections (intravitreal therapy) that slow the progression of the disease.

Intravitreal therapy has transformed the visual prognosis for the disease, as it stabilises vision and, in some cases, improves it. This type of treatment is personalised and requires strict adherence.

At the Ophthalmology Clínic Institute (Institut Clínic de Oftalmologia, ICOF), found between the Maternity and Sagrat Cor sites, over 10,000 intravitreal therapies are performed each year for the treatment of retinal diseases, most of which are for AMD.
