Living with a Helicobacter pylori infection

Correct pills

A Helicobacter pylori infection usually has a good prognosis when it is properly diagnosed and treated. During treatment, it is important to take the medication as prescribed, as adherence is a key factor in successfully eradicating the bacterium.

In some cases, however, clearing the infection may require more than one course of treatment. While this may be frustrating or concerning for the patient, it is relatively common in clinical practice due to potential antibiotic resistance.

When a treatment is not effective, there are alternative options available that can achieve eradication in the vast majority of cases.

Standing person with swollen abdomen or ascites

It is also important to bear in mind that, in some instances, digestive symptoms may not completely improve after treatment, even when the bacterium has been eradicated. In such cases, your healthcare professional will assess whether there are other causes for the symptoms and recommend the most appropriate course of action.
