Pneumonia research at the Clínic

Pneumonia research is mostly carried out at the Institut d’Investigacions Biomèdiques August Pi i Sunyer (IDIBAPS); specifically in the respiratory and critical diseases applied Research Group of the Respiratory, Cardiovascular and Renal Pathology and Bioengineering area. 

The main lines of research focus on:  

  • Lymphopenia (reduced lymphocytes in the blood) in patients with community-acquired pneumonia. 
  • Sepsis in patients older than 80 years with community-acquired pneumonia. 
  • Sepsis in patients infected with HIV and community-acquired pneumonia. 

At present, Hospital Clinic professionals dedicated to community-acquired pneumonia care are members of the following societies: 

  • Spanish Society of Pneumology and Thoracic Surgery - SEPAR 
  • European Respiratory Society - ERS 
  • European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases - ESCMID 
  • European Society of Intensive Care Medicine - ESICM 

They also participate in updating Spanish clinical guidelines for managing patients with community-acquired pneumonia.
