Investigación sobre Incontinencia Urinaria

Reading time: 2 min

Research focuses on various lines, including several projects:

  • "Clinical applications of ultrasound: correlation between ultrasound and functional urethral parameters”, which includes various studies on ultrasound and tension-free vaginal tape, as well as urethral injectable ultrasound.
  • "The surgical treatment of pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence", leading to projects comparing two types of mesh for repairing genital prolapse and their implications for sexual function.
  • "Conservative treatment of stress urinary incontinence", part of the European WOMENUP project funded by the European Commission (Horizon 2020), to improve the quality of life of women with mild or moderate stress urinary incontinence, through the use of a self-management system based on information and communication technologies (ICT) for conservative treatment. Other lines of research in conservative treatment include the study of pessary tolerance for genital prolapse and the response to posterior tibial nerve stimulation for urge urinary incontinence.
  • "Pelvic floor dysfunctions in the postpartum period" carried out in collaboration with the Obstetrics team at Hospital Clínic aims to investigate a childbirth care model capable of reducing the incidence of postpartum pelvic floor dysfunctions by identifying their risk factors. The real value of ultrasound studies in identifying postpartum injuries and confirming their proper repair is being investigated. Another line of research is the study of radiofrequency treatment for painful postpartum scars and pelvic floor muscle training.
  • "Sexual health in women with urogynaecological pathologies”, to understand their impact on both sexual activity and function; and a second phase to evaluate the changes that occur in this area following the different treatments applied.

The team of professionals that make up the unit has significant national and international exposure, both through their publications and their participation as speakers at the most important conferences in the field. At the international level, two of the unit's members have served on the European Urogynaecological Association (EUGA) Education Committee. Currently, the presidency of this society is held by our Unit's consultant (2025-2027), while another consultant serves as a member of its scientific committee. Both consultants also serve on the Ibero-American Society of Neurourology and Urogynaecology (SINUG) Executive Committee as treasurer and member.
