The Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Unit at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona is a national and international reference center for the treatment of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

The clinical objective of the Unit is to provide a healthcare framework that ensures the best possible health outcomes through comprehensive multidisciplinary care, tailored to the individual needs and expectations of each patient.

The Unit is made up of members from the Departments of Gastroenterology, General and Digestive Surgery, Radiology, and Pathology, with a special focus on inflammatory bowel diseases. In coordination with the Department of Obstetrics, it has a special program for pregnant patients with IBD, and specific care pathways with the Departments of Rheumatology, Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Psychiatry and Psychology, Hematology, Preventive Medicine, and Dietetics for nutritional support.

In addition, it runs a transition program for pediatric IBD patients in collaboration with Sant Joan de Déu Hospital in Barcelona.

The Unit is equipped with advanced endoscopic techniques, smart operating rooms, state-of-the-art MRI systems, a certified laboratory for diagnostic testing in the context of clinical trials, and IT resources for managing a high volume of data associated with clinical practice and translational research.

Every year, more than 2,500 patients are seen, including an average of 200 new patients. The Inflammatory Bowel Disease Unit has been accredited by the Catalan Transplant Organization to perform hematopoietic stem cell transplants in patients with severe refractory Crohn’s disease, and it offers innovative treatments within the framework of clinical studies.

The Unit has been repeatedly accredited as excellent in 2017, 2021, and 2024 through an external audit, in accordance with the quality standards of the Spanish Working Group on Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis (GETECCU). Certification issued by Bureau Veritas Certification.

Meet our professionals

The structure of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Unit consists of a multidisciplinary team with four specialists in digestive diseases, four in digestive surgery, two in radiology, two in pathology, one in dietetics and nutrition, two clinical nurses specialized in IBD, and two research nurses coordinating clinical studies. In addition, the Unit includes rheumatologists, dermatologists, ophthalmologists, obstetricians, and a psychologist.
