    This line focuses on risk factors and early diagnosis of chronic liver diseases in the general population. It defines liver risk in the general population and the concept of liver health. It also investigates the mechanisms, prevention, and treatment of complications in patients with liver cirrhosis.

  • Pathogenic mechanisms of alcohol-related liver sisease, effects of abstinence, and novel therapies

    Directed by Elisa Pose

    This established line combines clinical and translational research on alcohol-related liver disease. It includes independent and industry-sponsored clinical trials, prospective cohorts, and registries such as REHALC, along with mechanistic studies using human samples to identify biomarkers and therapeutic targets. It has received multiple FIS grants and produced over 50 publications and 3 PhD theses in the past 3 years.

  • Metabolic dysfunction as a driver of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease progression and risk stratification

    Directed by Isabel Graupera

    This line studies how metabolic dysfunction drives MASLD progression and supports risk stratification for personalized care. It integrates clinical, epidemiological, and translational research, from screening and early detection to advanced disease. A key focus is how diabetes, obesity, adipose tissue inflammation and extracellular vesicles contribute to liver injury, fibrosis, and disease heterogeneity. 

  • Translational liver cell biology and disease mechanisms in chronic liver disease

    Directed by Mar Coll

    This translational line focuses on liver inflammation and cellular mechanisms underlying chronic liver disease progression. It integrates translational studies on liver cell biology and intercellular crosstalk, with particular emphasis on macrophage identity and heterogeneity. Approaches include single-cell transcriptomics, multiplex immunofluorescence, and iPSC-based models to identify key pathways and therapeutic targets.
