Understanding the course of "Internet addictions" is essential to addressing them properly. Promoting a balanced use of technology is essential to prevent problems, and recognizing the first indications of addiction allows professional help to be sought as soon as possible. All of this helps improve the prognosis of these disorders and enables patients to re-establish a healthy relationship with digital technologies.

Internet addiction development

The development of Internet addiction is usually progressive, beginning casually with the use of the Internet as a regular tool for work, study or entertainment. However, some people experience greater pleasure than others from engaging in recreational or social activities online. This may be because they lack alternative sources of enjoyment; have social difficulties in their usual environment; or have experienced significant frustration or psychological trauma.

It may also be the case that the activities pursued on the Internet serve as emotional relief for daily stress or problems. Little by little, time spent online is increasing and difficulties in controlling Internet use may begin to appear. Psychological dependence on the Internet can then become established, and its use may begin to interfere significantly with school, work, family or social responsibilities, as well as affecting physical health (e.g., with sleep problems, fatigue or eye strain) and psychological well-being (e.g., anxiety, irritability and depression).

Sometimes, the person can become aware of the negative consequences of his "addiction" and seeks professional help to control his use of the Internet. However, it is usually relatives, teachers or co-workers who confront the person with these harmful impacts and encourage or support him in seeking help.

Internet addiction prognosis

The prognosis varies depending on several factors, including the severity and duration of the addiction, social support, the presence of comorbid disorders and the intervention strategies used. In general, the sooner the person becomes aware of the problem, accepts it and is motivated to change - the more support they receive from family and their social environment. Also, the earlier appropriate therapeutic intervention is provided, the better the prognosis and greater the likelihood of developing healthy Internet use habits.

However, if proper treatment is not provided or if comorbid disorders or significant difficulties in the family or social environment are present, progress can be slow or irregular. The addiction can then result in serious problems, such as social isolation, anxiety, depression or difficulties in adjusting to everyday life. In addition, as with other addictions, there is a risk of relapse into addictive use if vigilance is lowered, particularly in situations of stress.
