The Hospital Clínic Barcelona HIV-AIDS Unit works to comprehensively address the elimination of HIV (and co-infection with the hepatitis C virus) through early diagnosis and treatment. It is currently led by Dr Mallolas and is organizationally attached to the Clínic Institute of Medicine and Dermatology (ICMiD).

The Unit carries out around 25,000 visits a year, with around 400 new patients a year, of whom more than 200 have never received antiretroviral treatment.

The HIV-AIDS Unit cares for over 6,600 people infected with HIV, most of whom receive antiretroviral treatment. Over 93% of the people treated have an undetectable plasma viral load, meaning they cannot transmit the virus sexually.

This Unit also works on the development of new treatment strategies (new drugs and immunotherapy) to improve patient adherence and quality of life. All this has a significant impact on the management and control of the AIDS epidemic.

With regard to immunology and virology, the Unit's priority lines of research are as follows: the development of therapeutic and preventive vaccines, the analysis and control of viral reservoirs, cellular senescence and the study of the immune response to HIV.

The HIV-AIDS Unit at the Hospital Clínic Barcelona is a leader in telehealth, as it was the first to have a telemedicine platform, Hospital VIHrtual, over 12 years ago.

The HIV-AIDS Unit works in coordination with 14 different Services.
