Treatment of Alopecia at the Clínic

Reading time: 1 min

Hospital Clínic Barcelona is a tertiary public hospital managing a high volume of patients, primarily with autoimmune forms of alopecia, both scarring and non-scarring. In addition to treating patients from our designated catchment area, we also assess referrals from other hospitals, particularly those requiring specialised evaluation and advanced management, typical of high-complexity units.

The types of alopecia most commonly managed at the Clínic are alopecia areata, frontal fibrosing alopecia, lichen planopilaris, cutaneous lupus with follicular involvement and various forms of drug-induced alopecia. These conditions often require specific treatments not available at all levels of care, e.g., intralesional and systemic corticosteroids; immunomodulators and immunosuppressants; and newer therapies, such as JAK inhibitors, which have significantly expanded therapeutic options in certain autoimmune alopecias.

This combined clinical activity—managing complex new diagnoses and providing close follow-up of chronic conditions—reflects the Clínic’s role as a referral centre for the comprehensive management of inflammatory alopecias.
